Prvomajski prazniki 2015

Maj je najboljši mesec v letu in prvomajski prazniki so daleč najboljše počitnice v letu. Običajno v času teh praznikov pobegnem kam na tuje. Tokrat temu ni bilo tako, vseeno pa se bodo zadnji dnevi ostali v dobrem spominu.

Pred kratkim sem se končno zmigal do banke, kjer sem plačal zavarovanje za športne aktivnosti v regiji Murcije. S tem zavarovanjem imam prost vstop v športno dvorano, kjer je na voljo tudi plezalna stena. Verjetno bom med poletjem plezal večinoma zunaj, a vseeno se mi zdi to dobra naložba. Upam, da bom v naslednjih tednih plezal vsaj nekajkrat na teden. Telovadnico sem si šel v četrtek tudi ogledati in se pogovoril z nadzornikom. Mala balvanska stena je sicer stara in z improvizirano leseno podlago, a oprimki so kvalitetni. Poleg tega je menda na voljo še ena stena, katere pa še nisem videl.

Po plezanju smo imeli v navtičnem klubu otvoritev sezone. Po uradnem programu (ki je trajal pol ure in smo ga uspeli popolnoma zamuditi), smo se zapodili v brezplačno hrano in pivo. Pogovarjal sem se tudi z admiralom španske mornarice nastanjene v Cartageni (mislim, da se je predstavil, kot admiral). Po večerji smo najbolj zagnani napolnili plastenke z brezplačnim pivom in se podali proti mestu. Sledil je standardni žur, mesto se je pripravljajo la prvomajsko zabavo.

Petek se je začel bolj počasi. Po kosilu sem se sprehajal po mestu in poslušal glasbo. Na glavnih trgih so bili postavljeni odri in že tekom dneva je na njih potekal program. Na enem od prizorišč sem srečal kolegico prostovoljko iz druge organizacije v Cartageni. Z njenima prijateljema se je odpravljala proti lokalni plaži. Hitro so se odločili da me vzamejo seboj in jaz nisem ugovarjal. Po obisku pri Kitajcu, ki nam je prodal hladno pivo smo se posedeli v hipi kombi in se odpeljali do bližnje plaže. Tam smo najprej z deklinami iz mesta spili kavo (asiatico), potem pa smo se prestavili na mivko. Po sončnem zahodu nas je hlad pregnal proti domu, nato pa jasno naprej v mesto, kjer smo nadaljevali druženje nekako do jutranjih ur (seveda z obveznim kuhanjem makaronov ob 3h zjutraj v stanovanju od enega od prisotnih).

Sobota je bila odličen dan. Vreme je bilo popolno, kot naročeno za prvo regato v sezoni. Okrog navtičnega kluba je kar mrgolelo ljudi, nekateri so prišli le na kosilo, mnogo izmed nas pa je bilo tam zaradi tekmovanja jadrnic. Start naj bi bil ob 5h, a so ga zaradi izplutja ene od velikih ladji iz pristanišča prestavili za eno uro. Tokrat je tekmovalo enajst jadrnic z latinskim jadrom. Jadrnice so enaindvajset dlani dolge lesene barke z (pre)velikim jadrom. Mnoge izmed njih so v preteklosti bile namenjene ribarjenju. Posadka običajno šteje 5 članov.

Prijatelji društva, ki nismo tekmovali, tekmo pa smo si vseeno želeli ogledati od blizu, smo se posedli v motoriziran čoln in odpluli proti štartni liniji. Regata je potekala okrog 3-h boj, dve izmed njih so bile privezane v zalivu, znotraj valobrana, ena pa ob izhodu iz zaliva, med obema svetilnikoma. Pred začetkom sem slišal, da je veter precej močan in da je verjetno, da bo regata precej zanimiva. In res je bilo tako. V približno dveh urah, kolikor je regata trajala, so se v vodo prevrnile 3 jadrnice skupaj s svojimi posadkami. Zaradi velikega jadra in oblike trupa so te barke precej nestabilne. Trenutek nepozornosti in celotna posadka je mokra. Četudi je posadka dobro izurjena, ni varna pred vodo. Ena od posadk je zaradi prevrnitve namreč izgubila vodstvo. Včasih se menda celo zgodi, da od 11-ih jadrnic na cilj prispejo le 3.

Tekmovanje se je končalo praktično s fotofinišem. Po okrog 6,5 km (3,5 NM) je bila razlika med zmagovalnim in drugo uvrščenim plovilom le nekaj decimetrov. Kljub visoki tekmovalnosti in nekaj nesrečam je bilo vzdušje ob koncu zelo pozitivno.

Po lepem dnevu na vodi smo dobili še eno presenečenje. Na obisk v Cartageno sta namreč prišla kolegica in kolega iz Lorke, ki smo ju spoznali na uvodnem treningu za EVS. Skupaj smo odšli do našega stanovanja, kjer smo iz ostankov v hladilniku sestavili odlično omako za … testenine, seveda. Po večerji smo se odpravili v mesto, kjer smo spet uživali v flamenku, skupinskih plesih, živi glasbi in hladnemu pivu.

Vikend sem zaključil z izletom do Los Nietos in vasice blizu, kjer ima ena od kolegic privezan svoj čoln. Ta dan sem se povabil na jadranje po malem morju (Mar menor). Po izplutju iz pristana in dvigu jadra, mi je kmalu predala v roke krmilo in mi prepustila jadranje večji del časa. Ob enem izmed otokov sva se zasidrala in kljub temu, da to ni bilo v planu, skočila v vodo. Prijateljica, ki je bila dan prej na enem od čolnov, ki se je prevrnil, mi je povedala, da je voda tukaj precej bolj prijetna. In res je bila super. Ko sva se kasneje sušila, sva opazila, da se nisva zasidrala pretirano dobro, kar bi se lahko končalo tudi precej slabše. Kakorkoli, z jadranjem sva nadaljevala severno-vzhodno. Ko sva prišla do drugega otoka, sem predlagal, da ga obplujeva po drugi strani in se nato vrneva v pristan. Odločitev je bila sprejeta in kmalu sem spoznal, da je pri teh odločitvah dobro misliti tudi na smer vetra. Prva lekcija – plutje proti vetru je bolj dolgotrajno – je bila jasno predstavljena. Na poti okrog otoka se je povečal tudi veter in valovi, kaj je jadranje naredilo kanček bolj zanimivo. K sreči je bila jadrnica bistveno bolj stabilna, kot tekmovalne jadrnice, tako da nisva bila v resni nevarnosti.

V marino sva se vrnila po kakih 5h urah jadranja, okrog pol šestih popoldne. Od tam pa s kolesom in vlakom nazaj do Cartagene.

Six weeks: The taste of sea and fire

I’m now in Cartagena for 6 weeks and slowly I’m getting to know the city, the organization and the people here. The last few week are getting busier and busier and I am getting the basic idea of how will the work in summer look like.

During these weeks I’ve been embarking on several missions. In the port I’ve been helping Viktor to repair and renew his love – Annamarie. I was filling the cracks in the wood with the putty (masilla) around the boat and Viktor was polishing the old paint of, so the boat can be fixed with the new protective coating. After the working sessions we usually went out for a beer. On one of these occasions I met mister Agustin that is currently in Cartagena, but lives in Lanzarote, Canary islands. He expressed a wish to have a volunteer also in his organization. Before I got this EVS confirmed, I was planning to go to Canaries with the help of a website that connects volunteers and organizations that need them – workaway.org. So I was happy to send him a link to the page. Through it he’ll hopefully find some people that might be able to help him. If not I just might go there for a month or so after my work here is done.We also started the work in the library in the social center of Santa Lucia. Our first task were to start cataloging the donated books to the database so we’ll later be able to lend them out to people. We also started with the scheduled opening hours for the library. The library will be opened every weekday except Monday day after 4pm.
We also had two courses. The first one was held by Gines and the topic was graphical design and the tools for it. We learned about Indesign and Photoshop, about some basic design ideas and other thinks one should be careful about when designing a poster or a similar material. The other course was about sailing and lateen sail boats. I’ve already written about this course, so I won’t go into details here.  Even though both courses were in Spanish, I managed to pick up some new information and I’m happy that I participated on them.In the last weekend I did my first escape from Cartagena. I aimed for Valencia, where I wanted to check out the festival Las Fallas. Valencia is a nice city and I’m happy that I saw the hassle of the festival like Fallas. However I might want to go back there when the cruds of crazy people go somewhere else.The day after I came back, we went for a sailing trip with schooner type boat (golleta). The wind was low and the sea was just a bit wavy, but it was smooth sail. Unfortunatly we weren’t able to turn the engine of, because it can be moody and not start again. We didn’t want to stay out of the port, so we didn’t risk it. I hear that there will be plenty of more opportunities  to sail in silence.

Lateen sail sailing course

Ena izmed nalog, ki so del mojega prostovoljnega dela tu v Cartageni, je tudi EVS dnevnik. Tega naj bi pisal približno enkrat mesečno. Prvih nekaj zapisov bo v angleščini, kasneje, ko se izboljšam v moji Španščini, pa upam, da bom lahko kaj napisal tudi v španskem jeziku.


This weekend Association de amigos de vela latina organized a introductory sailing course for the interested public and us, the volunteers working in the organization.

The course started on Friday evening. We were first introduced with the presentation about what the lateen sail is, where it originates from and how it developed. We briefly skimped across the history of lateen sails and their importantce in Catragena. After the introductory presentation, we took a walk into the haurbour where the association has their sailing boats stored or moored. We took a look at the different boats, the 21 palm sized, that are used for the summer regattas, and the bigger, 42 pals long sailing boats. We also mentioned that the organization is hard at work renewing some of the boats that used to be lateen sail boats before they were changed into the motor boats. After many years of using the boat as a motor boat, the owners decided to change it back to the sailing-type boat. The association is a great help with organizing and helping out with the the renewal. After the visit to the marina, we went back to the community center in Santa Lucia, where we continued our theory part of the course. We had the introduction to the techniques of sailing, the parts of the boat and the expressions used in sailing. We were also shown a couple of the basic knots that are useful for mooring the boat or other occasions.

On Saturday morning we drove to Mar menor, where the association has some more boats moored. The idea was to have the first day of sailing and then to repeat the sailing a day after. when we came there, however, it became obvious, that the weather will not be good enough to go to the sea. The wind was too strong at about 10 knots and there was  a high chance of rain. However, all the members of the course came and we did have a session with all of them. We went to the boat with which we were supposed to sail, and prepared it as if we would go for a real sail. The lateen boat requires even more preparation than a traditional sailing boat and the setup at the beginning is just as important as the knowledge about how to act in the sea. We were shown how to properly set up the sail, how, where and why to tie the ropes, how to raise up the sail and how to maneuver the boat. The whole operation actually lasts longer that I imagined and the additional explanation made it even longer. We did some dry runs and at the end we tidied the boat and put everything back to its place.

On Sunday, the third day of the course, we finally made it to the sea. The weather was looking promising, the wind was good for a beginner’s course and there was even a bit of sunshine. We have setup the boat as we learned the day before, put on the life jackets and were dragged out of marina by one of the marina staff and her orange motor boat. The wind was blowing from north-east and since we had the lateen sail on the starboard side of the boat (es.: estribor), we first sailed in a non-optimal way. One of the drawbacks of the lateen sail is that it’s not equally efficient if the wind is blowing from the port as opposed to starboard side. Depending on how you setup the sail in the beginning one of this sides will be the “bad sailing” (es.: navegar a la mala). with this technique, we sailed about half way to the biggest island in Mar menor, called Barón. Then it was time to turn. Because of the low wind, we had some troubles. The mood in the boat got a little bit tense, when it started lightly raining. But after about 10 minutes and two or three failed attempts, we finally managed. On the way back, we were using the whole potential of the sail, so we theoretically cached more wind power. After some smooth sailing, we came close to the marina. We called the lady that took us out of the marina, to come get us again, but she wasn’t answering the phone. As the rain stopped and we had time, we decided to do another zig-zag to come closer to the marina. The two turns that we had to do, went much smoother than the first one. In a coupe of minutes we were close to the gate. Now also our tow-boat-lady answered her phone and came to get us. We were on solid land in a matter of minutes. After disassembling the boat, we went for a beer and finished up the nice day.

The sailing course was nice despite a few nervous moments. The fact that it was solely in Spanish was a bit of an annoyance for me, because I picked-up less that I’d be able to if it’d be in English. However, I can understand that the paying participants have priority. Anyway, it was nice and I did learn some basics. Hopefully, during my stay here, I’ll have many more opportunities to learn about sailing (and other activities for that matter).

I was advised not to take the camera on board, so sadly, I don’t have the photos of the sailing itself.

Settling in, going to school and painting a boat

Ena izmed nalog, ki so del mojega prostovoljnega dela tu v Cartageni, je tudi EVS dnevnik. Tega naj bi pisal približno enkrat mesečno. Prvih nekaj zapisov bo v angleščini, kasneje, ko se izboljšam v moji Španščini, pa upam, da bom lahko kaj napisal tudi v španskem jeziku.

Tu je torej prvi od teh zapisov:


First week on my EVS was comfortably slow. I arrived to Cartagena on Sunday, 8th of February, late in the evening. I met one of my co-volunteers, as the second was not yet in the city. I settled into my new room and than we went out to see the city and have our first caña y tapas.

The day after my second coworker arrived. During the week we got familiar with the neighborhood that we live in, learned a little bit about Amigos de la Vela Latina, the organization that we’ll be working for and had a tour of the city.

We also had our first working experiences within the project. On Wednesday afternoon we drove to Los nientos, where our organization has some of it’s boats moored. One of them is an old fishing boat that was donated to the organization. It used to be a motor boat, but now it’s being renovated and turned into a lateen sail boat by the members of the organization. The plan is to go north with it sometime in the early spring, so it has to be ready by then. This requires some basic maintenance, like painting all parts of the boat, but also some more serious modifications. The opening where the propeller used to be has to be closed, the keel has to be lowered and strengthened, the motor and the opening that it sat in has to be closed, the mast has to be prepared and set in place … The volunteers were working on the simpler part of the operation. We had to paint the mast, the boom, the rudder and some other parts. As the whole boat is made from wood, protection against strong sun and salty watter is crucial.

On Friday, we got the second taste of our work here. We went to a local school, where we had presentations of our home countries to the kids studying there. The school is in poorer part of the city, so some of the kids there don’t have as many opportunities as the rest of us. They might not be able to afford to travel around and meet people from other nations, so this was one of the rare opportunities for them to hear about our countries directly from their citizens. It was very lovely when one of the girls came to us after presentation. She told us that she moved here from Ukraine and was thrilled about listening about our countries. This kind of feedback was a great reward for the hours spend preparing the talk.

Jadranje z neznanci

Spet en doživjetji poln dan. Včeraj sem bil z nekim neznancem zmenjen za jadranje. Kot se ponavadi izkaže pri teh kočljivih situacijah je bilo odlično tudi tokrat.

Raul je inženir iz okolice Talina v Estoniji. Spoznala sva se preko elektronske pošte, ko je pred nekaj tedni posla mail v skupino. Povpraševal je, če je kdo na Malti in če bi se želel srečati za pijačo. Omenjal je tudi jadranje in tudi zaradi tega sem mu brez razmišljanja odpisal. Po tem je minilo nekaj tednov, ko ni bilo nobenega odgovora. Sam sem že skoraj pozabil na ponudbo, ko mi je poslal SMS.

Dobila naj bi se že kak dan prej, a so na poti iz Sicilije imeli slab veter in tako smo se dobili v Soboto. Sam sem že cel teden navdušeno čakal na ta dan, zato sem bil kar rahlo zmeden, ko sem videl, da jadrnico zapušča (vseh) 5 ljudi. Pričakoval sem namreč, da me bodo pobrali, nato pa gremo praktično takoj naprej. Estonci so si vse skupaj zamislili bolj sproščeno. Tako, kot je prav, nenazadnje so bili na počitnicah.

Na pomolu, kjer so se izkrcali smo se spoznali. Raul, dečko s katerim sem se dogovoril je bil  starejši kot sem pričakoval. Menda jih je imel 45. Z njim je bila še njegova žena, njegova dva sinova in kapitan jadrnice, ki je bil tudi njegovih let. Od pomola smo se sprehodili proti bližnji trgovini, kjer smo se takoj zapodili proti hladilniku. Ko smo potešili prvo nujo – pivo – smo postali pred bližnjo pasticerijo, kjer si je družina kupila kosilo. Pojedli so na klopci ob obali. Kapitan je po malici skočil nazaj na jadrnico, kjer so pozabili prenosnik. Med tem sva z Raulom pohitela še po par piv, saj alkohol menda precej pomaga proti morski bolezni. Priprave so vendarle najpomembnejši del odprave. Preden smo lahko odšli na jadrnico je družina morala postoriti še par stvari. Tako smo v sobotnem popoldnevu po Buggibi iskali wifi točko (našli smo jo seveda v baru, kjer je, jasno, padlo še eno pivo), nato pa še kopirnico, kjer bi lahko natisnili letalske karte. Njihove počitnice so se bližale koncu in seveda je bilo potrebno kupiti še darilo za dedka …

Lahko bi bil precej bolj nervozen, a sem se precej hitro prilagodil počitniškem tempu družine. Raul ni bil pretirano zainteresiran za kupovanje daril, vseeno pa se je trudil. Verjetno bolj zaradi žene.

Ko smo končno opravili, kar je bilo potrebno (začimb kot darilo za dedka še vedno nismo našli), smo se prav počasi napotili nazaj. Na moje veliko veselje (čeprav mi je bilo, malo zaradi piv, malo pa zaradi dobre družbe in sončka, že skoraj vseeno) smo se končno posedli v čolniček. Počakali smo še kakih 5 minut, da se je vrnil Raul, ki je spet skočil po par pivc, nato pa smo odrinili.

Končno na vodi. Prva stvar, ko smo prišli na jadrnico je bilo hitro kopanje. Čeprav smo bili še sredi zaliva polnega privezanih čolnov je ohladitev neizmerno prijala. Nato smo se odvezali in odpluli čez zaliv. Namenjeni smo bili proti bližnjem otočku, otoku svetega Pavla Tu naj bi apostol Pavel doživel brodolom, po katerem je (za kazen ali zahvalo?) pokristjanil celotno Malto. Veter je bil za plovbo precej umirjen, zato smo si pomagali z motorjem. Kmalu prispemo na cilj, se zasidramo in odplavamo do otoka. Ogledamo si otok, naredimo nekaj turističnih fotografij in se počasi odpravimo nazaj. Ko prispemo nazaj do jadrnice pa verjetno najboljši del večera. Raul in kapitan na plan prineseta kitaro in mandolino in to je to. Repertoar je bil precej Irsko obarvan. Peli smo Whiskey In The Jar, Seven Drunken Nights, The Wild Rover in podobne. Ljudje v bližnjih čolnih so nam bili totalno nevoščljivi. No, opazili so nas sigurno.

Ker se je počasi spuščal mrak smo odpluli nazaj proti mestu. Ko smo prišli nazaj na kopno so me povabili še na večerjo. Čeprav sem se branil so mi to tudi plačali. V zameno so hoteli le rundo piva. Pa naj bo.

Po večerji smo se poslovili. Sam sem odšel do glavne avtobusne postaje, kjer sem spoznal, da mi je zadnji avtobus že odpeljal. Ker se nisem hotel voziti z taksi-kombijem za 3€ do Pačevila (od tam bi moral namreč hoditi še kako uro) sem se odločil za štop. Ob taki uri in na Malti, ki je štoparsko slaba država to mogoče ni bila najbolj pametna odločitev, ampak kaj bo vedela pijana glava. Prevoz sem vseeno dobil, najprej le do glavne ceste, le kak kilometer stran. Ustavili so mi trije Srbi, tako da sem lahko ponovil še tistih par Srbskih besed. Med štopanjem ob glavni cesti sem prav tako imel precej pomislekov, le kdo bo ustavil ob tej uri. Vseeno sem v nekaj 10 minutah dobil prevoz, praktično do domačih vrat. Zapeljali so me trije Libijci. V eni roki čik, v drugi pa plastenka. Ho-ruk!

Postelje doma sem se prav razveselil. Nedelja, dan po tem je bila namenjena počitku.
